How to use Backup4All to move mail to new PC

Post by homepagestore »

How can I use Backup4All to move Outlook mail to a new PC?

I installed outlook but did not setup any accounts, then I installed Backup4All and then initiated the restore for Outlook. The restore completes with errors and then when I open Outlook it as me to name the profile.

Can someone post the procedure about how to use Backup4All to move mail?

Thanks,
Richard

Hi,

Can you tell us what version of Outlook and Windows you have on each computer?

Please note the backup/restore for Outlook works:
- if there is the same Outlook version
- if there is the same user name
- if there is the Windows version is newer than XP

Sorry I do not have the log. The problem appears to me caused by Backup4all restoring only the mail files and not rebuilding the register entries. Can you confirm, does Backup4all rebuild the register entries when it restores mail?

The question is "Does Backup4all restore the Outlook Register Entries when it restores the mail files?"
I think the answer is No but I want to make sure there is not something wrong with the way I am restore the mail files.

Without the Outlook register entries, every email account must be recreated before the restore is performed. Otherwise creating the email accounts after the restore might corrupt the mail files.

If I am wrong, then please explain how the Backup4all Outlook backup and restore works.

Hi,

The plugin also includes the registry keys needed for Microsoft Outlook.
For restore, you just need to install Outlook without configuring the profiles. Run the restore using Backup4all. The profiles will be recreated.

Well that is interesting because when I ran the restore none of the email accounts were created. This is a situation where the backup was performed on one PC and the restore was completed on a new PC. Both PCs are running Windows 8.
