Mirror Backup - Missing files not updated

Post by philibertperusse » Thu Sep 30, 2010 11:20 am

I am using "Mirror Backup" feature to backup a disk on one machine to a disk on a second machine. What happens is that if I go on the 2nd machine and say remove a bunch of files from the destination folder. Then, Backup4all will not UPDATE the destination folder to update the missing files from DESTINATION. It is as though Backup4all uses exclusively the content of the Catalog for its comparison/backup AND do not list the files in DESTINATION to decide what to copy.

The options I am using are:
- "Fast mirror",
- "Remove excluded files or deleted files".
- "CRC32" only criteria
- DO NOT "Use local catalog"
- DO NOT "Store temporary catalog data in memory"
- DO NOT "Test after backup"
- Destination Network or FTP (same results)

How to reproduce:
- Create a source folder with 3 files: test.txt, test.jpg and test.pdf
- Run backup once from source folder to destination folder
- On destination folder, remove test.jpg
- On source folder, change the content of test.txt
- Run backup again
- Result: test.txt gets updated, test.jpg is still missing from destination folder.

Hi,

That is not a bug, this is how Backup4all was designed to work. It looks in the backup catalog to decide which files will be backed up.
Please note you should never manually delete the backup files from destination.

But is there no way to update the catalog to reflect the real files in the drive? Ie: to test that the catalog matches the real files? It´s all too easy for files to be changed, moved or deleted.

Thanks,
chris

Hi,

The backup destination must be in a different place than your work files, where you do not just edit the files by mistake.
