Missing Files in FTP Backup

Post by R_Edwards »

I run Backup4All to backup to an FTP site to Mode = Mirror with the following options (Fast Mirror checked, Remove excluded or deleted files from backup checked). Under Advanced I have Use local catalogs checked. Because of the amount of data I can't use the Test after backup option. Plus I have Backup4All email me if it has any warnings or errors.

I was in need of a method to compare the files (here on our Server against those on the FTP site) and found an inexpensive Diff utility. It revealed some missing files. Then I opened Backup4All and ran a manual test and below is the report:

================================================================================
[2/16/2011 9:26:58 AM] Backup4all Professional Edition 4.5.236
[2/16/2011 9:26:58 AM] Starting test on "Job1" for backup number 583 at 2/16/2011 9:26:58 AM

[2/16/2011 9:27:01 AM] /array1/Backup/ ... /Pictures/Adobe/ OK
[2/16/2011 9:27:01 AM] /array1/Backup/ ... /Pictures/Microsoft Clip Organizer/ OK
[2/16/2011 9:27:01 AM] Downloading the file "/array1/Backup/ ... /Pictures/Microsoft Clip Organizer/Sepac Gear.png" (FTP) : OK
[2/16/2011 9:27:01 AM] Compute CRC32 for "C:\Documents ... \Pictures\Microsoft Clip Organizer\Sepac Gear.png" : 8D01832

[2/16/2011 9:27:06 AM] Error: Folder " ... \Favorites\" not found in backup, skipped.
[2/16/2011 9:27:07 AM] Error: File " ... \Favorites\Stone Cat Café.url" not found in backup, skipped.
[2/16/2011 9:27:07 AM] Error: File " ... \Favorites\3rd Battalion — 172nd.url" not found in backup, skipped.
[2/16/2011 9:27:07 AM] Error: File " ... \Favorites\Garmin. We'll Take You There.™.url" not found in backup, skipped.

Test finished at 2/16/2011 9:27:10 AM, 9 file(s) and 12 folder(s) tested, 4 error(s) and 0 warning(s) found
================================================================================
[NOTE: I shortened the folder names above with 3 dots ... to reduce the length]

FYI: Our FTP site is a 1TB Buffalo TeraStation

I found the problem. The FTP site is Linux and our server is Windows. The FTP site does not like special characters in the file name.

So how can I correct these missing files?

I tried to manually FTP one or two files and ran the test again. So for the time being I am going to each user and helping them to rename to problem files.

Hi,

The solution for now on is to use an FTP server that can handle such files.
What was the name of these files in destination?
Do you know you can monitor your backups remotely with Backup4all Monitor? You can read more here: https://www.backup4all.com/backup4all-monitor.html

Switching FTP hardware is NOT a solution or possible.

Below is a screen capture. Red color = match / Blue color = error <NOT matched>

Hi,

See if you can configure the FTP server to handle such characters.

Well I checked the FTP Box (a 1TB Buffalo TeraServer with (4) 250MB drives setup with RAID). I could not find any setting. Looks like I'll have to print a listing of the differences and work with each staff person to rename the problem files. After checking it is less than 12 files or folders per staff person times 9 (staff), so thats not to bad.

Thanks for your input
