Warning: Cannot read blocks for file ...

Post by kidcarbon »

We just purchased v5 mainly to get the block level backup capability when backing up our outlook pst file.

This error is very disappointing:

Warning: Cannot read blocks for file C:\Users\admin\Documents\Outlook Files\[email protected]. Error : Cannot open file "C:\Users\admin\Documents\Outlook Files\[email protected]". The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process

Does this mean outlook must be closed to be backed up?! (volume Shadow copy is running).

Hi,

Backing up open files has the following limitations: It works
- only on Windows XP or newer
- only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files
- only on local hard drives
- only on NTFS formatted partitions
- only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured

Are the above conditions met?

Thanks for your reply.

All of the conditions are met.

- only on Windows XP or newer

I'm running Windows 7.

- only for users with administrator access rights to copy open files

I am logged in as an administrator.

- only on local hard drives

I'm backing up drive C.

- only on NTFS formatted partitions

It is a NTFS formatted partition.

- only if the VSS (Volume Shadow Service) is running and it is properly configured

VSS is running. How can I ensure that it is properly configured?

Hi,

Do you run the backup manually or scheduled?
Do you have the same problem if you manually run the backup after starting Backup4all as administrator (right click on icon and select "Run as administrator").

Hi.

I normally run it scheduled but I get the same error when run manually (even when started as administrator).

Thanks.

Hi,

Do you have the same problem if you disable the block backup option?
Is there any error listed in Event Viewer?

In the meantime, you should be able to successfully backup those files while Outlook is closed.

Hi,

I was finally able to test...

If the block backup option is disabled the backup works without errors. The shadow copy works.

There are no errors listed in the vent viewer, only the warning message (Warning: Cannot read blocks for file...)

Thank you for your help with this.
