Been running an daily incremental for almost a year keeping all file versions. Now to save space want to limit max number of kept file versions. If I edit the exiting backup job to suit will the next run remove all unwanted extra versions or do I need to create a new job and restart from scratch ?

If you set the limit now, it will be applied to the current backup job next time you run the backup. There is no need to create a new backup job only for that.
