I have defined a named filter but cannot understand how to re-use it in a new backup job. In other words, I want to specify the same file masks I've used in another backup job, without having to re-type all of the individual masks again -- such as *.pl *.xls etc.

You must define the filters in File->Options->Filters, in order to be able to use them in other backup jobs.
