Files in use are no longer backed up, VSS errors

Post by tranglos »

System: Windows XP SP2 and SP3 (the same problem after updating to latest service pack); using administrator account; Backup4All Professional 4.3 build 175

I have used Backup4All since 2006, but the problem began only recently, without any changes to the system I have noticed. When trying to back up a file in use, Backup4All now displays an error message:

Cannot open file
(path to file)
Process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

The usual Retry, Skip, Skip all and Abort buttons are available. This happens for example when trying to back up Firefox profile folder while Firefox is running, but of course Firefox isn't the only application affected. The backup seems to run the same way as before, with the "preparing volume shadow copy" status message, and the vssvc.exe process is running.

In what may be related to this issue, very often when Backup4All is closing after finishing a scheduled job the following error message appears:

Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program files\Softland\Backup4All Professional4\VscSrv.exe
abnormal program termination

Finally, there does seem to be something wrong with the VSS service. At the time the backups are being made (a group of "mirror" jobs, scheduled to run once a day), a number of error entries are added to the system event log, with signatures 12293 and 12297. Several of these entries are generated during the time Backup4All runs the mirror jobs. These are:

for id 12293:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Error calling a routine on the Shadow Copy Provider {24602736-bed9-4619-91b0-243447c6409c}. Routine details: BeginPrepareSnapshot({a5ac31bc-b2ed-466b-9d4a-6c3f58307c50},{b951d38b-49bd-46a0-a951-5064258ab081},\\?\Volume{b96f8576-821b-11dc-b381-0015af2366d6}\) [hr = 0x8000ffff].

for id 12297:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: The I/O writes cannot be flushed during the shadow copy creation period on volume \\?\Volume{54cd5900-03d7-11df-9c2f-806d6172696f}\. The volume index in the shadow copy set is 0. Error details: Flush[0x8000ffff], Release[0x00000000], OnRun[0x00000000].

What could possibly be causing these errors?

Same problem here, was with ver. 4.3 and SQL Server database files. Occurs randomly, once works once not.

Let's see if 4.4 will fix it.

Seems like the new version fixes this issue at least so far. Will keep testing and let you know if the error occurs.
