Errors, Errors and More Errors

Post by bmbrooks »

Not sure that Backup4All provides a lot of confidence that my data is safe.

A little background.

I have spent may months transferring my DVD and CD collection to hard disk to enable streaming to Chromecast. Not wanting to go through the process again, simple solution is buy some external hard drives and backup it up. To make it easier I broke the backup into 4 separate jobs. One for Movies, One for TV Shows, One for Music and the last for Pictures.

First backup job (Movies) took awhile but completed successfully.

Second backup job (TV Shows) was even larger. The backup part of the job completed with no errors, but the Test failed with missing folders (???). Reran the test, it completed successfully. I added a few more files to the source and did an incremental backup. Again the backup part completed successfully but test failed with missing folders. If I open the destination ZIP file and I can plainly see the folders that Backup4All said were missing.

[8/20/2014 8:55:28 AM] Starting test on "HTPC - TV Shows" for all backup numbers at 8/20/2014 8:55:28 AM
[8/20/2014 8:55:28 AM] 1 Full 8/17/2014 3:30:18 PM 2518 2,023.20 GB
[8/20/2014 8:55:28 AM] Testing content of zip D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip
[8/20/2014 8:55:28 AM] Warning: Folder "1\2\" not found in zip "D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip"
[8/20/2014 8:57:04 AM] Warning: Folder "1\24\" not found in zip "D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip"
[8/20/2014 8:57:04 AM] Warning: Folder "1\24\25\" not found in zip "D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip"
[8/20/2014 8:57:04 AM] Warning: Folder "1\24\26\" not found in zip "D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip"
[8/20/2014 9:09:11 AM] Warning: Folder "1\24\26\23\" not found in zip "D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip"

Third backup (Music) is still running...

The fourth job was for pictures which was small. The backup was successful. I added some files to the source and tried an incremental backup, but Backup4All now complains that there is a problem with the destination. I followed that up with a test to verify the existing backup, with the same error.

[8/28/2014 10:43:17 AM] Starting test on "Agent86 - Pictures + Images" for all backup numbers at 8/28/2014 10:43:17 AM
[8/28/2014 10:43:17 AM] 1 Full 8/9/2014 12:23:35 PM 59 49.14 MB
[8/28/2014 10:43:17 AM] Error: The destination "(HDD) Z:\" is not accessible using the curent configuration.
Test aborted at 8/28/2014 10:43:17 AM, 0 file(s) and 0 folder(s) tested, 1 error(s) and 0 warning(s) found

Even though the drive Z is present, I can create files on the device through the explorer, and the music backup is currently writing to the same location the incremental backup of the pictures is unsuccessful

At this point I cannot decide if I have a valid backup for TV Shows and/or Pictures. So I decided to start testing a restore.

First up was pictures. Just restore the first file in the backup, results in the strange error that backup4all cannot find the zip backup file. I can go out to the drive, double click the zip file and open it with no problems.

8/28/2014 11:19:48 AM] Restoring files from backup "Agent86 - Pictures + Images", start time 8/28/2014 11:19:48 AM
[8/28/2014 11:19:48 AM] Opening file ":memory:"
[8/28/2014 11:19:48 AM] Processing zip file Z:\Agent86 - Pictures + Images\Agent86.1_192.168.1.86_Pictures.zip
Waiting for user input
Cannot find "Z:\Agent86 - Pictures + Images\Agent86.1_192.168.1.86_Pictures.zip".
Please select another path to this file/folder and Retry.

On to the TV shows backup, rename one of the source files and try and restore the file from the backup to original location, unsuccessful. Try to do the restore to an alternative destination. Unsuccessful. In both cases I have full security to write files to the location. I can easily go to the folder, right click and create a new text document to verify this.

8/28/2014 10:41:38 AM] Processing zip file D:\HTPC - TV Shows\HTPC.1_K.zip
[8/28/2014 10:41:39 AM] Error: Failed to restore K:\K:\TV Shows\Smallville\Season 2\Smallville S02E23.mkv. (srCreateError)
Restored 0 file(s) and 0 folder(s)

Having reached a level of paranoia I decided to test a restore of the Movies backup. Same sequence as the TV Shows, rename a file on the source, restore to original location unsuccessful. restore to an alternative destination unsuccessful. Again in both cases I have full write access to the destination.

[8/28/2014 10:48:28 AM] Processing zip file D:\HTPC - Movies\HTPC.1_K.zip
[8/28/2014 10:48:29 AM] Error: Failed to restore K:\K:\Movies\2012.jpg. (srCreateError)
Restored 0 file(s) and 0 folder(s)
Restore operation finished at 8/28/2014 10:48:30 AM with 1 errors

End result of my experience with the three backup jobs I have completed
1). 1 of the 3 I will have to redo because I cannot add to it
2). 1 of the 3 is in of an unknown quality, so I probably should redo it
3). 3 of the 3 cannot be restored.
