Backup Strategy help.

Post by ddelbiondo » Tue May 03, 2011 1:43 pm

I have found that backing up to my local hard drive first is very fast and that is including testing the backup for errors. From there I am going to use the help file "How to back up to multiple destinations" to mirror the back up to my NAS.

My plan is to perform a full backup every 2 weeks and perform differential backups daily. What is the best practice to force the full backup? Should I do a cleanup to remove the backup files from my local hard drive to initiate a full backup?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,
David

Hi,

Please read this article:
https://www.backup4all.com/using-backup4all-faq-7-kb.html#bookmark10

Use Differential type instead of Incremental and the procedure is the same.

I will be running this backup from a group. So I will be scheduling the group to run. Is it still possible to schedule an individual backup to run while being part of a group? I am not sure I completely understand how that will work.

Thanks,
David

hi,

When scheduling the backup group, each backup job inside that group will be executed with its default backup type.
You can also create individual scheduled tasks for each backup job in that group and you can force another backup type to be executed.

So I understand that even though the backup is associated with a group. I can still independantly schedule a backup within that group to run with a diffrent backup type. I will be testing this tomorrow to make sure I get it right.

Thanks,

I have not completely figured this out. I created a back up group, Email_mirror. Within the group, I have created 3 back ups.

First one is Email_Local (saved to the local hard drive), diffrential backup type.
Second one is Email_NAS1 (saved to locally network attached storage), mirror back up of Email_Local.
Third is Email_NAS2 (saved to NAS by FTP), again mirror back up of Email_Local.

I have scheduled the group to run Monday - Saturday and all works well. The issue I have not been able to over come is on every other Sunday, I want the Email_Local to do a full back up. I see where I can schedule the Email_local back up to run independantly of the group on Sunday, but the mirror sites do not get updated.

I am sure the answer is staring me in the face. Please let me know if you need more information.

Thanks,
David

Hi,

The solution would be to schedule all 3 jobs to run independently of the group on Sunday.
First schedule Email_local to run a full backup.
Then schedule Email_NAS1 and Email_NAS2 to run a mirror (these 2 can overlap).
Email_Local and Email_NAS1/Email_NAS2 should not overlap (ex: schedule the full in the morning and the mirrors late in the evening).

As I stated in an earlier post I created a back up group, Email_mirror. The first backup in the group is a differential and the next 2 are mirror backups. The differential does a full backup every night, like it is backing up for the first time.

Is there a configuration I am missing some where? I use differential in other backups and it works without issue.

Thanks,
David

UPDATE: A closer look at the properties, I found I had clear backup checked.
