Deduplication

Post by tbalci »

Hi Team,

I don't know if that has been requested before, so apologies if it was.

Is it possible to introduce deduplication to save backup image space? Currently Backup4all saves space just by zip compression, and the savings can vary according to the files backed up. However, having deduplication will help a lot in terms of space savings on the backup target independent of the file types backed up. It will also help with considerable savings on the cloud destinations both in terms of data storage and data transfer.

I know that this is a significant effort for the development teams, but I believe it is a feature that will skyrocket Backup4all to a different level in terms of backup software.

Any ideas?
Cheers

Hi,

That feature is already on our Wishlist.
I cannot tell if/when it will be implemented.
Do you know you can monitor your backups remotely with Backup4all Monitor? You can read more here: https://www.backup4all.com/backup4all-monitor.html

I think de-dupe would be a great addition. I have been using Duplicati and also recently looked at Duplicacy and both have de-dupe built in. I beleive it is very effective in Duplicacy.
For example in my case I have 3 copies of photo libaries being backed up which share 90+% of the same files (each libary is about 50Gb) so would be pretty effective.
I suspect this would not be easy to implement but it could bring big savings in space required for backups.
Using B4All (v9.8 build 725) on Windows Server 2019
