Google Drive - MAx Path Length etc ?

Post by rothers »

Backup4All 7.3, Windows 7

We have an incremental backup that runs daily. First backup job backs up to local hard drive, incremental each night, all is fine.

As a 2nd offsite backup we also run a 2nd job, mirror backup, using the same sources to Google Drive. Only runs after the first job has completed.

With this second job we are getting multiple retry errors on certain files which cause the backup to take forever, for example:

Retry uploading the file "\\Hp2\d\Pre-September 2017\Archive\Back Up of Alastair's Work 26.11.13 REFERENCE ONLY\Glenelg\Projects\Pre Tooling\Raytec\Vario\Raytec Vario IR\Phase 9 - Lens Cover, Slider B and Shroud Revisions 15.03.12\Ray_Vario20_Assy\Ray_Vario20_940_filter_031111.SLDPRT"

Is there any limitation of max path length with google drive that is not there with local backups ? Or maybe a file name character prob, comma in the above for example ?

Thanks
Neil

We've finally got to the bottom of this problem and it's not Backu4all or Google Drive.

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... ing-a-file

Windows is limited to a max path length of 260 characters. I find this quite staggering in this day and age of 64 bit operating system (or even 32 bit), Ah well, you learn something new everyday.

Our data files are created locally under d:\ on various workstations.

But over the network, as the backup sees them, they are accessed as, for example, \\HP2\d\ , an extra 5 characters.

Our users were able to create path lengths right up to the 260 char limit locally (windows won't let you do any more) but accessing them over the network tips things over the brink.
